Brilliant icecream every time, 2009-07-28 This maker is really simple to use, makes delicious icecream in 20 to 30mins and is easy to clean. You can see the icecream as it is being made so you can stop the machine at your desired consistency or add choc chips, nuts, fruit, marshmallows, choc sauce, whatever you fancy, 2mins before the icecream is ready. Highly recommend Ben & Jerry's icecream recipe book with this product.
Only possible downsides to be aware of with this maker are:
a)
It's 1 litre in size, but it will only make about a pint (less than half a litre) of icecream at a time. The maker needs that bit of extra room to churn the mixture. I have found out the more room you leave the better! Invest in a larger maker if you want to serve more than 4 people at a time, or make the icecream in 1pint batches in advance. I prefer this smaller model as I know no matter how large the batch my family will eat it all when its made, so the smaller batch is better for the waistline!
b)
If you prefer hard icecream -- when the maker is ready transfer the mix to another bowl to freeze it further. When the maker is finished it is just at the dangerous "eat me now" phase! I prefer it at this stage but maybe others wouldn't
c)
The bowl needs to be frozen for at least 24hrs in advance. This is a pain if you want icecream right away. I've taken to storing the bowl in the chest freezer permanently, but some small home freezers wouldn't have this option. In order to clean the bowl properly one should defrost it fully and wash it out before refreezing. This wastes a lot of time and energy, I'd recommend cleaning the bowl out with a soft plastic spatula to remove icecream traces and a quick wipe of a clean warm damp cloth before replacing in the freezer.
Enjoy!
Ice Cream maker, 2009-09-23 It's really easy to use, and takes only 20 mins to produce a litre of yummy ice cream! I've recommended it and also bought one as a gift for a friend. Highly recommend it - but make sure that your freezer drawers are deep enough to accommodate the bowl, which needs to be frozen for 24hrs before each ice-cream production session (it's easier to keep it in the freezer permanently).
Kenwood IM250 Ice Cream maker, 2009-10-06 Looking for an Ice Cream maker with detachable bowl at a reasonable price. This unit fits the bill, is easy to use & clean. Must remember to freeze the bowl 24 hrs before required. Best if ingredients are chilled in the fridge before processing. Have had very good results.
kenwood ice cream maker, 2009-10-06 very good value for money.Recipes in book not that good but have used other recipes that taste so much better and easy to make
Great little machine to get started with, 2009-07-24 I bought this ice cream machine on the back of the other reviews. I'd never made my own ice cream before so wanted to start with something that had good reviews and was a good price. I've so far made frozen berry yoghurt twice and the white chocolate & ginger ice cream both from the book and leaflet it comes with. The white chocolate & ginger ice cream doesn't make a litre though - I'd say more like half a litre, so a bit disappointing and I'd say to leave out the cake part of it and halve the chocolate as it is a bit too sweet. I also found the ice cream needs to be churned and then put in the freezer for a good couple of hours so it can freeze properly - even then it was a bit too soft, so overnight is best. I've also made lavender & honey ice cream which I found on the internet, which made a full litre, and I don't know what I did wrong but it was in the machine for nearly an hour and not much sign of it freezing, perhaps the bowl needed to be in the freezer for longer than the 24 hours or maybe I put too much liquid in at once. The recipe was too much liquid to do in one go, so I had to do it in 2 batches and it didn't seem to freeze while churning very much at all, so I had to then mix the two together and leave it in the freezer overnight - the result is lovely though and well worth the wait by the way. I'm waiting to receive an ice cream making book which may help me out with helpful info, and because I'm dubious about the quantities in recipes, I've actually ordered another machine so I can have 2 on the churn at once without any panics as I understand it needs space to expand once freezing happens ... perhaps that's where I went wrong. So far my tip is ... 24 hours prior freezing of the bowl is probably sufficient to make lovely frozen yoghurt, but I'd probably leave it in the freezer longer than the 24 hours to make ice cream and then the ice cream needs overnight to freeze solid enough to scoop balls. Of course, I now need to make room for 2 bowls in the freezer whenever I make ice cream! The only down side of the design of this machine I'd say is I can't easily unlock the lid, and removing the inner freezing bowl from the outer plastic bowl isn't very easy to then be able to empty the contents into a pot (due to the outer bowl being wet and the suction of the locking together), to work quickly I've taken to leaving it in the outer bowl and lifting it together and scooping it all out with a plastic spatula instead. In all, I'd recommend this machine and say it's a good buy until I'm experienced and confident enough to warrant buying a self freezing and a lot more expensive machine.
