It's a hydrometer, used to measure the specific gravity (the density) of a liquid. It's as shown in the picture, and comes in a small plastic tube. You can pay more for a sample jug to go with it, but you can just as well use the storage container, just be careful not to overfill it.

It has readings on it for estimated alcohol content, but you're better to use an online calculator to give you a more accurate answer.

I like it when items are as they appear to be. This is a fine example of that, it's simple and gives a nice even distribution over the surface. The thread on the lid is deep enough so it won't pop off during use like some useless versions. As it's all metal you dont have to worry about the lid perishing or discolouring like some plastic ones.

For anyone on the slimfast plan - buy one of these! It works fantastically for making the milkshakes, thirty seconds of shaking produces a really smooth frothy shake. I had been mixing them up with a fork, they stayed lumpy, then I tried using our mini handheld blender which worked but it's such a faff to take apart and clean it every time so I thought I'd give this a go and it's brilliant - a bargain solution at under a fiver. After use, it just needs a quick rinse out, and I'm sure the shaking burns off a few calories. The markings round the side are also quite useful as 250ml is exactly on the dry vermouth marker on the bronx recipe. I was a bit worried that the top might come loose during shaking but it fits really well and firmly together. It's also fairly robust as I discovered when I dropped it on our kitchen floor the day it arrived. (I'm pretty sure it would make a great cocktail too....)
